Raya Welcomes Competition for Spain's Goalkeeper Position

David Raya, the goalkeeper for Spain, has expressed his enthusiasm regarding the competition for the national team's starting goalkeeper role at the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026. He believes that the rivalry with fellow goalkeepers Joan Garcia and Unai Simon will enhance the overall performance of the squad. Currently, Raya, who has made a name for himself as one of the top goalkeepers in the Premier League with Arsenal, is vying for a spot in coach Luis de la Fuente's lineup ahead of Spain's Group H match against Cape Verde on Monday. Despite Simon being the frontrunner due to his significant contribution to Spain's Euro 2024 victory, Raya views the competition among the three as a positive aspect for the team.

A Healthy Competition

Raya shared his thoughts with reporters at Spain's training facility in Chattanooga, stating, "We approach the competition with complete naturalness. There has always been a strong rivalry among the goalkeepers. We motivate each other to improve and make the manager's selection process more challenging. Our goal is to support one another, and whoever plays in the initial games will give their best effort."

In preparation for the tournament, Garcia started in a 1-1 draw against Iraq, while Simon played in a 3-1 victory over Peru, with Raya participating in the second half of that match.

Raya's Unique Journey

The 30-year-old goalkeeper noted that much of the media focus has been on Simon and Garcia, both of whom play in LaLiga, while he has spent the majority of his career in England. "It's understandable that the media discusses Joan and Unai, given their LaLiga experience. I've been away from Spain for quite some time. I recall my first call-up to the national team when people questioned my identity... I'm striving to make it difficult for the manager to make a decision," Raya remarked.

Upcoming Matches in Group H

Spain's upcoming fixtures include matches against Cabo Verde and Saudi Arabia in Atlanta, concluding their Group H journey against Uruguay in Guadalajara.
