Daring Self-Immolation Attempt Outside Police Station: What Led to This Disturbing Incident?
Incident Overview
Dhenkanal: A shocking incident unfolded on Saturday evening when a 28-year-old woman attempted to set herself on fire outside the Dhenkanal Superintendent of Police's office.
The individual, identified as Lija Sethy, hails from Jagatsinghpur district and is married to Amarnath Jena, residing in Ankarantipur within the Dhenkanal Sadar police jurisdiction.
Her attempt was thwarted by police officers present at the scene, who quickly intervened and confiscated a plastic bottle filled with petrol and matches from her.
Upon receiving the alert, Superintendent of Police Abhinav Sonkar arrived at the office to address Lija's concerns.
She expressed her desperation, stating that her decision to self-immolate stemmed from her frustration with the conduct of officials at both the Sadar and Town police stations.
In a swift response, four hours post-incident, the SP suspended two police officers: Town police station Sub-Inspector Utkal Bijay Mohanty and Sadar police station Sub-Inspector Rojalin Minz.
Lija and her husband were reportedly renting a place in Angul.
She claimed that her brother-in-law, who lives in Rameshwarpur, verbally abused her, leading her to seek assistance from the Town police station.
However, she was directed to file her complaint at the Sadar police station, as her in-laws' residence fell under their jurisdiction.
When she approached the Sadar police station, she was again redirected to the Angul police station.
After facing repeated obstacles in her quest for justice, Lija resorted to this drastic measure at the SP's office.
Following her account, SP Sonkar ordered police personnel to ensure her safe return home and summoned both station officers for clarification.
He announced that an investigation into the incident has been initiated, promising strict action against any negligent officers.
The Sadar Sub-Divisional Police Officer has been tasked with compiling a report regarding the actions of the police officials involved.
Authorities are also looking into how Lija managed to acquire petrol in a plastic bottle.
