Emergency Response in Berhampur

Berhampur: In a dramatic incident, two sisters were rescued by the Fire Services after being trapped for almost two hours in a malfunctioning lift at KVR Plaza, located on Giriroad within the Baidyanathpur police jurisdiction on Monday.

Saudamini Meher, aged 42, and her 40-year-old sister Sarita Meher, both residents of Third Line in Brajanagar, found themselves stuck between the third and fourth floors when the lift unexpectedly failed.

They managed to alert emergency services by calling 112. A team of eight firefighters, led by Assistant Fire Officer Pradeep Kumar Pattnayak, quickly arrived at the scene. They worked in conjunction with the lift operator to switch the system to manual mode and utilized ropes to lower the lift to the ground floor.

With the help of a lift technician and a master key, the team successfully opened the lift door and freed the sisters. Fire department havildar Shatrughna Das reported that both women appeared shaken and breathless.

After receiving water and resting in an air-conditioned room, they were able to return home. The sisters were at the plaza to visit a bank, which they later discovered had moved locations. Officials attributed the lift failure to a mechanical issue.
