Dale Steyn Critiques Exclusion of Ottniel Baartman from T20 World Cup Squad
Dale Steyn Questions Baartman's Omission
Dale Steyn, the renowned South African cricketer, has expressed his concerns regarding the absence of fast bowler Ottniel Baartman from the Proteas' 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026, set to take place in India and Sri Lanka. Baartman, a right-arm pacer, currently leads the wicket-taking charts in the ongoing SA20 League 2025-26 season, having claimed 11 wickets in just four matches for the Paarl Royals, with an economy rate of 9.20.
Baartman's Recent Performance and History
Previously, Baartman was part of the 2024 Proteas team that faced India in the T20 World Cup final held in Barbados. Since that match, he has participated in only 11 out of South Africa's 29 matches, leaving him on the sidelines as the team aims for a better outcome next month.
Proteas' Strategy: A Focus on Pace
In preparation for the T20 World Cup, the Proteas have opted for a squad heavily focused on pace. Despite this strategy, Baartman was not selected, as the team includes notable bowlers such as Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, Khweza Maphaka, and Anrich Nortje.
Steyn's Strong Support for Baartman
Steyn, who served as Baartman's bowling coach during the initial three seasons of the SA20 at Sunrisers Eastern Cape, emphasized the need to recognize Baartman as one of South Africa's premier white-ball bowlers. He stated, "We must start viewing Baartman as one of SA's best white-ball bowlers. He is the leading wicket-taker in SA20, has won the league twice, and reached the final. This competition features four international players, often batters, alongside all the Proteas! He is number one, which is top quality, yet he will be watching this year's T20 World Cup from home," Steyn remarked on social media.
Baartman's T20I Career Stats
Baartman made his T20I debut against the West Indies in Kingston in May 2024. Since then, he has played 17 T20 internationals, taking 22 wickets with an average of 21.59. The 32-year-old boasts an economy rate of 8.21, including two impressive four-wicket hauls.
