Urgent Call for Assistance in Dakshin Ahatguri

DERGAON, July 24: Residents of Dakshin Ahatguri village in the Dergaon co-district are in dire need of assistance as floodwaters have tragically engulfed entire families.

This region, situated merely nine kilometers from Dergaon town, has been severely affected by the relentless currents of the Brahmaputra River since 2005. Over the last twenty years, more than a dozen villages—including Naromari, Balichapari, Na Mati, and others—have vanished into the river. Additionally, around 10-12 educational institutions, community centers, and healthcare facilities have been lost, leaving the local population without essential services.

Currently, areas such as Shririshtika, Sadar, Ebani, and Bahir Roumara are at risk of facing a similar fate. The road linking Chirishtika to Dhodang is precariously close to being consumed by the river. Due to erosion, numerous families have lost their homes and land, with many taking refuge on embankments as a last resort, while others have relocated far away in search of work.

Despite the severity of the situation, local government departments have not implemented effective solutions. Residents claim that no public officials have taken meaningful action regarding resettlement or compensation for those affected. The community of Dakshin Ahatguri is urging the government to promptly evaluate the situation and adopt scientific measures to mitigate further erosion.

Local citizens are advocating for resettlement plans for families who have lost their properties due to erosion. They are also calling for the reconstruction of schools and health centers that have been lost. The residents hope that their local MLA and government agencies will soon take action to alleviate the hardships faced by the people of Dakshin Ahatguri.
