Cyclone 'Murasu' Gains Strength, Threatens Andhra Pradesh Coast
Cyclone 'Murasu' Intensifies
Amaravati. The cyclone 'Murasu' has started to intensify rapidly in the Bay of Bengal. On Sunday, a deep depression transformed into a cyclonic storm, prompting the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue alerts for coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh and northern Tamil Nadu. According to the weather department, the storm could escalate into a severe cyclonic storm by Monday morning. It is expected to make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast between the night of November 2 and the morning of November 3, bringing with it strong winds and heavy rainfall.
Weather Department Updates
The IMD's bulletin released on Sunday afternoon indicated that the cyclonic storm 'Murasu' is currently active over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal. As of 11:30 AM on Sunday, the storm was located approximately 560 kilometers east-southeast of Chennai and about 660 kilometers south-southeast of Visakhapatnam. Meteorologists are closely monitoring its direction, speed, and intensity.
Wind Speeds and Potential Damage
Wind speeds could reach up to 110 kilometers per hour.
The IMD forecasts that cyclone 'Murasu' will continue to move in a west-northwest direction and may strengthen further. By Monday morning, it is likely to transform into a severe cyclonic storm. After that, the storm is expected to approach the Andhra Pradesh coast. It is anticipated to cross the coastline between Nellore and Narasapur.
During landfall, wind speeds are expected to range from 100 to 110 kilometers per hour, with gusts potentially reaching 120 kilometers per hour. Such strong winds pose a risk to coastal areas, threatening trees, power lines, and vulnerable structures.
Second Cyclone Expected Soon
A second cyclonic storm is expected to hit the Andhra Pradesh coast within a week.
The cyclone 'Murasu' raises concerns as it is the second storm to impact the region in a short span. The previous cyclone, 'Aranab', struck near Narasapur on October 28, causing significant destruction. During that storm, seven lives were lost, and extensive damage occurred to agriculture, infrastructure, and communication systems, with thousands of acres of crops destroyed.
Government Response and Precautions
The government is currently assessing the damage caused by cyclone 'Aranab'. A team from the central government has arrived in Andhra Pradesh to evaluate the situation and inspect affected areas. Based on their report, relief and economic assistance measures may be implemented.
In light of the impending threat from cyclone 'Murasu', it is crucial to enhance vigilance in coastal regions. The state is facing the challenge of maintaining effective disaster response systems, especially in areas already impacted by the previous storm.
Impact of Cyclone 'Aranab'
Cyclone 'Aranab' resulted in seven fatalities and widespread crop damage.
The earlier cyclone 'Aranab' wreaked havoc across several parts of Andhra Pradesh, leading to significant loss of life and property. The storm caused extensive damage to agriculture, roads, electricity, and telecommunications, with an estimated loss of around ₹4,600 crores.
Ongoing Monitoring and Safety Measures
As the new cyclone 'Murasu' approaches, it is essential for residents in coastal areas to adhere to safety guidelines issued by the weather department and local authorities. The next few days will be critical for Andhra Pradesh as it braces for the impact of these cyclonic storms.
