Cyclone Arnab Devastates Crops in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha
Impact of Cyclone Arnab on Farmers
Cyclone Arnab has caused significant damage to farmers across various regions in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The strong winds and persistent rainfall have led to the collapse of standing paddy crops, while flooding in many fields has submerged the crops. Farmers who were on the verge of reaping the rewards of their hard work have seen their hopes dashed by the storm. In addition to rice, crops such as bananas, coconuts, vegetables, and other horticultural produce have also suffered.
Widespread Crop Damage in Andhra Pradesh
Initial assessments indicate that approximately 224,000 hectares of agricultural land have been affected across 14 districts in Andhra Pradesh, with paddy crops being the most severely impacted. The districts of West Godavari, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema, Kakinada, East Godavari, and Krishna are among the hardest hit.
In several areas, the paddy crops were nearing maturity and ready for harvest. However, the strong winds caused them to fall in the fields, and the ongoing waterlogging raises concerns about the quality and yield of the rice.
Over 3,000 Acres of Crops Damaged in Koraput, Odisha
In Odisha's Koraput district, the cyclone has also adversely affected rice and vegetable crops. Reports suggest that over 3,000 acres of agricultural land have been impacted. Heavy rainfall in blocks such as Pottangi, Semiliguda, Nandapur, Narayanpatna, and Bandhugam has led to water accumulation in the fields. Many vegetable crops are beginning to yellow, increasing the risk of rot.
Farmers Face Financial Struggles
The primary concern for farmers is that their crops were almost ready for harvest, and they had already invested significantly in seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation, and labor. With crops now lying in the fields and waterlogged, there is a fear of reduced yields. Many farmers are anxious that their hard work may go to waste.
In addition to rice, banana plants have also been damaged by the strong winds. Coconut trees and other horticultural crops have been affected as well. Farmers who rely on these crops for their livelihoods may face increased economic challenges in the coming months.
Odisha Government Announces Relief Package
To assist those affected by the storm, the Odisha government has announced a special relief package. This includes immediate aid of 50 kilograms of rice and 2,500 rupees for impacted families. Additionally, farmers who have suffered a loss of 33% or more of their crops will receive assistance ranging from 8,500 to 22,500 rupees per hectare, depending on land classification.
The government has instructed officials to survey the affected areas to assess crop damage. A central team is also expected to visit the impacted districts in Odisha to evaluate the situation.
Relief to Follow Damage Assessment
Following Cyclone Arnab, the administration's priority is to accurately assess the damage to the fields and provide assistance to affected farmers. In Andhra Pradesh, agricultural department officials are surveying the impacted regions to facilitate the process of crop insurance and government aid.
The cyclone has once again highlighted the severe impact of natural disasters on agriculture and farmers' livelihoods. Fields that once held promise for a good harvest now show only water and fallen crops. Farmers are hopeful that the government will quickly assess the damage and provide appropriate compensation so they can prepare for the next planting season.
