Cyclone Arnab Approaches Odisha: Government Takes Precautionary Measures
Impact of Cyclone Arnab on Odisha
Bhubaneswar. As Cyclone 'Arnab' moves towards the coast of Andhra Pradesh, several regions in Odisha are experiencing adverse effects. Heavy rainfall and strong winds have disrupted daily life in southern coastal Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone is expected to make landfall as a very severe cyclonic storm between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, near Yanam, on October 28. Wind speeds could reach between 115 to 125 kilometers per hour, potentially increasing to 140 kilometers per hour.
In light of the cyclone's severe threat, the weather department has issued a red alert for five southern districts of Odisha—Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri. Additionally, heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated in Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Balangir, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Bargarh, and Nuapada districts. Given the seriousness of the situation, the state government has ordered the closure of all schools, colleges, and anganwadi centers in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri on October 28 and 29.
Chief Minister Mohan Chandra Majhi has reviewed the disaster management system and instructed all departments and district administrations to remain on high alert. The state government has deployed 302 rescue teams for relief and rescue operations. Vulnerable populations in low-lying areas are being relocated to safe shelters, and pregnant women and patients are being admitted to the nearest health centers. Eight ministers have been specifically assigned to monitor the situation in at-risk districts alongside senior officials.
Due to rough seas and high waves, fishermen have been strictly advised against venturing into the ocean, and all boats have been secured along the shores. The Ganjam district administration has closed major tourist spots and beaches, including Gopalpur and Sonapur, to visitors until October 30. Furthermore, the Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC) has rescheduled some exam dates for the civil service main examination-2025 due to the cyclone's impact. Authorities are urging citizens to pay attention to official bulletins and avoid unnecessary travel.
