Curfew Enforced After Mob Violence in Roing

A curfew has been declared in Roing, located in the Lower Dibang Valley district of Arunachal Pradesh, after a mob killed a migrant worker from Assam on Friday. The worker was accused of sexually assaulting multiple minor girls, according to reports.

The victim, identified as 19-year-old Riaz-Ul Kurim from Bongaigaon, was employed at a construction site adjacent to a school. Authorities stated that he was alleged to have assaulted several students residing in the school's hostel, as reported by the Superintendent of Police for Lower Dibang Valley, Ringu Ngupok.

Concerns were raised about the hostel's security, as there were no grills on the windows and the sliding doors were not locked, an unnamed police officer noted.

On Thursday, school officials convened a meeting with the parents regarding the alleged incidents. Following this discussion, parents began to confront the laborers at the construction site.

Kurim attempted to escape but was located by parents and local residents who subsequently attacked him. Police intervened and took him into custody, but the mob followed and forcibly removed him from police protection, leading to further violence.

Despite being taken to a hospital for treatment, the mob found him there and assaulted him again. Authorities have initiated multiple investigations into the incidents of child sexual assault and lynching.

Superintendent Ngupok stated that while the situation in Roing is tense, it is currently under control. The district administration has indefinitely closed the school’s hostel and advised parents to transfer their children to nearby government or recognized private institutions.
