Agartala, Aug 21: During his recent visit to Tripura, Cuban Ambassador to India, Juan Carlos Marsan Aguilera, emphasized India's significant role in international politics.
The Ambassador arrived in Agartala to participate in two rallies organized by the CPI (M) in Sabroom and Agartala, commemorating the birth centenary of Fidel Castro, Cuba’s revolutionary leader and former President.
A delegation of senior CPI (M) officials, led by former MP and CITU president Sankar Prasad Datta, welcomed the Cuban Ambassador at the airport.
Aguilera reflected on the enduring historical relationship between India and Cuba, noting India's pivotal role in the Non-Aligned Movement during the 1960s. He highlighted the significant meeting between Fidel Castro and India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, in New York in 1960, where they discussed enhancing cooperation and establishing a new international economic framework.
He pointed out renewable energy as a vital area for India-Cuba collaboration, mentioning Cuba's efforts to expedite its energy transition.
The Ambassador praised the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) scholarship program, noting that over 700 Cuban professionals have come to India for training in various fields, including artificial intelligence, new technologies, agriculture, science, and biotechnology.
Aguilera referred to India as the “pharmacy of the world,” acknowledging its crucial role in providing affordable medicines to countries in the Global South.
He added that India is Cuba's primary supplier of active pharmaceutical ingredients and other essential materials for medicine production in the Caribbean.
Expressing optimism about the growing partnership, Aguilera stated that Cuba is eager to enhance and diversify its bilateral cooperation with India in the future.
