CSK Coach Acknowledges Missed Bowling Opportunities

Stephen Fleming, the head coach of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), revealed that during the IPL 2026 auction, the team had explored a broad range of bowlers but ultimately missed out on several who have since excelled. After CSK's recent match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Chennai, Fleming shared insights with the media, stating that while various options were considered, he couldn't recall the specific reasons behind the final choices. He emphasized that the team had meticulously assessed all available options at that time. "I’m trying to remember the auction process regarding the names you mentioned. I can’t recall the exact dynamics. We had a long list of bowlers we evaluated and missed out on, who were perhaps out of form then but are performing well now. We thoroughly reviewed everything, but I can't remember those details," Fleming explained.

Changing Dynamics of T20 Finishers

Fleming also discussed the shifting concept of 'finishers' in T20 cricket, noting that the modern game requires aggressive batting from the outset. He pointed out that teams now strive for consistent scoring rates of 10-12 runs per over throughout the innings, rather than gradually building up to a strong finish. "I don’t believe in the concept of finishers anymore. From the first ball, everyone is expected to score aggressively. It’s not about waiting until the 16th over to accelerate. The expectation is to maintain high run rates throughout the innings," he stated.

Confidence in CSK's Batting Strength

Despite the challenges, Fleming expressed confidence in CSK's batting lineup, highlighting the explosive talents of players like Dewald Brevis and the legendary MS Dhoni. He noted that with such a powerful roster, he is optimistic about the team's ability to sustain a high scoring rate. "We need a more aggressive strategy to reach scores like 240. It’s crucial to have players who can maintain that aggression throughout the innings, and we certainly have that. Remember, we have Brevis on the sidelines and one of the best finishers in MS Dhoni, which adds significant power to our lineup. I’m very pleased with our pace," Fleming remarked.

Challenging Start to the Season

The five-time IPL champions are currently facing a tough start to the season. After finishing at the bottom of the points table last year, CSK has lost both of their opening matches. They are set to face the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), on Sunday, as they aim to regain their footing in the tournament.
