CSK Coach Defends Sanju Samson Amid Early IPL Struggles

Chennai Super Kings' head coach Stephen Fleming has defended Sanju Samson amid concerns over his early performance in IPL 2026. After transferring from Rajasthan Royals, expectations were high for Samson, especially following his success in the T20 World Cup. However, his initial scores of 6 and 7 have raised eyebrows. Fleming reassured fans that two innings do not define a player's potential, emphasizing Samson's training and match-winning capabilities. With a poor start to the season, CSK hopes for a turnaround as they prepare to face the defending champions, RCB.

Fleming Supports Samson's Performance

Stephen Fleming, the head coach of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), has come to the defense of opening batsman Sanju Samson as scrutiny surrounds his performance with the five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions. Samson's much-anticipated transfer from Rajasthan Royals (RR) brought high expectations, especially after CSK's disappointing last season where they finished at the bottom of the points table. Following his recognition as Player of the Tournament in India's 2026 T20 World Cup victory, Samson entered the IPL with considerable momentum. However, his initial performances for CSK have been underwhelming, with scores of just 6 and 7 in his first two matches.

'Two Innings Don't Define a Concern'

"He won't score in every match. It's T20 cricket, and he had a slight edge today. But he's in good form and training well. When he finds his rhythm, he can be a match-winner. Therefore, two innings shouldn't raise any alarms," Fleming stated to reporters following the match.

Samson's Performance at Chepauk

Samson's record at Chennai's Chepauk Stadium has been less than stellar. According to CricViz, in six innings at this venue, he has accumulated only 66 runs, averaging 11 with a strike rate of 100. This average is the lowest for him at any IPL ground where he has played at least five innings. With six more matches remaining this season, CSK is hopeful that he can improve his performance.

CSK's Challenging Start to IPL 2026

CSK has been struggling in the IPL, having lost both of their opening matches this season. They will face the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), on Sunday.
