CSK Coach Backs Sanju Samson Amid Struggles in IPL 2026
Fleming's Confidence in Samson
Stephen Fleming, the head coach of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), highlighted the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket, noting that a player in good form can dominate the game. He expressed unwavering support for Sanju Samson, emphasizing the team's commitment to his development within the CSK framework.
This statement follows a challenging performance by Samson, who has struggled in his last three matches since being traded from Rajasthan Royals ahead of IPL 2026. In a recent match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, CSK faced a daunting target of 251 runs, but Samson was dismissed for a single-digit score, contributing to CSK's third consecutive defeat.
Fleming Offers Full Support to Samson
"T20 cricket can shift rapidly. We witnessed this during the T20 World Cup, where a batter on a roll can be extremely impactful. Sanju is one of those players who can be very dangerous. Our support and confidence in him remain strong as he navigates his journey with us," Fleming stated during the post-match press conference.
Fleming defended Samson's performance, suggesting that the wicketkeeper-batter is still acclimating to the team dynamics. He remarked, "Transitioning to a new franchise can be challenging, even if he feels comfortable. There’s still a sense of belonging that he is working through, especially with several new faces in the squad. We are focused on strengthening team bonds off the field, and he is integrating well. He is eager to contribute alongside Ruturaj and other senior players."
RCB Claims Victory
In the IPL 2026 match on Sunday, RCB secured a decisive 43-run victory over CSK at M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Tim David's explosive 70 runs off just 25 balls, along with solid performances from his teammates and a strong bowling display led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, propelled RCB to their second consecutive win of the season.
RCB's batting lineup, featuring aggressive innings from Tim David, Devdutt Padikkal, and captain Rajat Patidar, amassed a formidable total of 250 runs for 3 wickets. CSK, despite notable contributions from Sarfaraz Khan (50 runs off 25 balls), Prashant Veer (43 runs off 29 balls), and Jamie Overton (37 runs off 16 balls), fell short, being bowled out for 207 runs in 19.4 overs.
Impact on IPL 2026 Standings
With this victory, RCB now leads the IPL 2026 points table with four points and a remarkable Net Run Rate (NRR) of +2.501. Conversely, CSK finds itself at the bottom of the standings, having lost all three of their matches so far.
