During a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, the use of pellet guns has sparked significant controversy. In response, the head of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) expressed his support for the security personnel and urged them to perform their duties without fear. Speaking at a force commendation ceremony, CRPF Director General Khyande Pratap Singh reassured his officers that he would take full responsibility for their actions. He stated, 'As the Director General of CRPF, I want to assure you all that whether it is operational battalions or law-and-order units, I will take responsibility for all decisions and actions you undertake while performing your duties with integrity.'
Singh emphasized the importance of carrying out their responsibilities fearlessly. He assured that he would assume accountability whenever necessary. This statement comes amid protests related to the NEET-UG paper leak controversy, which has affected millions of students nationwide. The 'Cockroach Public Party' organized a 'Chalo Parliament' march on July 20, during which violence erupted, leading to clashes between protesters and security forces in and around Jantar Mantar.
According to the Delhi police, over 65 protesters and more than 200 police officers sustained injuries during the unrest. The alleged use of plastic pellets by security forces during the operation later became a significant political issue, especially after reports emerged of serious injuries among several protesters. A report from a news media outlet indicated that an internal investigation by the CRPF revealed that a Rapid Action Force (RAF) officer fired seven rounds from a pellet gun during the protests on July 20, with five pellets hitting the demonstrators.
The report further noted that at least three protesters required hospitalization due to pellet gun injuries sustained during the march, which turned violent as they attempted to advance towards Parliament.
