Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Advocates for Continued US Military Action Against Iran
Saudi Arabia's Stance on Iran Conflict
The Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, has reportedly encouraged US President Donald Trump to persist in military efforts against Iran, viewing it as a pivotal chance to transform the Middle East, as detailed in a report by a prominent news outlet. During recent talks, the Crown Prince expressed to Trump that the military operations involving the US and Israel should continue to undermine Iran's leadership, emphasizing that Tehran represents a long-term danger to the Gulf region.
However, both Washington and Riyadh are reportedly apprehensive that an extended conflict could lead to increased assaults on Saudi oil facilities and potentially entangle the United States in a drawn-out war. Despite this, Saudi officials publicly refuted claims of advocating for a prolonged conflict, asserting that the kingdom has consistently favored a peaceful resolution to the situation, even prior to its escalation.
In a statement, the Saudi government emphasized, “Our primary concern today is to defend ourselves from the daily attacks on our people and our civilian infrastructure.” They further criticized Iran for opting for dangerous provocations instead of pursuing diplomatic avenues, stating that this approach is detrimental to all parties involved, particularly Iran.
The report also indicated that Prince Mohammed has contemplated targeting Iran's energy infrastructure and even ground operations, although such actions would entail considerable risks.
Since February 28, the US and Israel have initiated a coordinated assault on Iran, resulting in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This military action followed a period of escalating pressure from President Trump on Tehran to negotiate a new agreement regarding its nuclear program. Iran's response has intensified the conflict across the Gulf region.
The ongoing conflict has already disrupted energy markets, with Iranian retaliation impacting oil facilities and shipping routes, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global energy passage. Analysts mentioned in the report noted that Saudi Arabia is concerned that a half-hearted military campaign could embolden Iran, allowing it to launch further attacks in the region. Additionally, Riyadh is cautious about the instability in Iran, which could create a power vacuum and lead to increased insecurity.
U.S. officials have not provided comments regarding the alleged private discussions. The White House has stated that it does not disclose conversations between the president and foreign leaders. Meanwhile, President Trump announced on his social media platform that the US would delay any planned strikes against Iranian power facilities for five days, mentioning that Washington had engaged in “very good and productive conversations with Tehran” in the preceding days. He refrained from identifying the Iranian leader involved in the discussions, describing the interlocutor as a “top person” who is “most respected” in Iran.
