JORABAT, Sept 21: The absence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his cabinet members during the main 'Zubeen Divas' event at Zubeen Kshetra, marking the first death anniversary of singer Zubeen Garg, has drawn significant criticism from opposition leaders. They have raised concerns regarding the government's commitment to honoring this cultural figure.
Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi expressed his discontent, questioning why neither the Chief Minister nor any minister attended the three-day event, which concluded on Saturday. He asked, “What prevented the Chief Minister or any minister from visiting Zubeen Kshetra on Zubeen Divas?”
Lurinjyoti Gogoi, president of the Assam Jatiya Parishad, echoed similar sentiments, criticizing the absence of the Chief Minister, Union ministers, and the State BJP president from the memorial. He described their attitude towards Zubeen Garg as “mysterious.”
This backlash occurs amidst a broader discussion on the official commemoration of Zubeen's legacy. Although the State government provided logistical support for the three-day event at Zubeen Kshetra, the Chief Minister opted to commemorate the anniversary at the BJP's state headquarters in Basistha, where he participated in a blood donation drive organized by the party.
The BJP held blood donation camps statewide as a tribute to the singer, announcing plans to observe his birth and death anniversaries annually through such initiatives. Minister Keshab Mahanta was present at the event alongside the Chief Minister.
During his address on Saturday, Sarma stated that the people of Assam would determine how 'Zubeen Divas' should be celebrated, indicating that the government would adhere to their wishes.
The Chief Minister's stance has introduced a policy aspect to the opposition's critique, raising questions about whether September 19, the date of Zubeen's passing, should be officially recognized as 'Zubeen Divas.'
The three-day event at Zubeen Kshetra attracted thousands of fans, including artists, public figures, and Zubeen's family. The commemoration featured prayers, music, and cultural performances, culminating on Saturday, the anniversary of his death.
While the government supported the memorial at Zubeen Kshetra, the BJP chose to honor the occasion through statewide blood donation drives. However, the question of granting formal recognition to 'Zubeen Divas' remains unresolved.
The opposition is seeking clarification on the government's intentions regarding the official status of this observance and its future role in commemorating Zubeen Garg.
