Ujjain, June 27: A serious incident has drawn attention to police negligence following the stabbing of a 19-year-old college student, allegedly by her former partner, in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain on Friday. The victim was reportedly stabbed 14 times and is currently in critical condition, while the suspect was apprehended within three hours of the attack.

The young woman had previously filed a molestation complaint against the accused on June 15, but instead of taking formal action, local authorities allegedly facilitated a compromise between the two parties.

After the attack, the victim informed senior police officials about the mishandling of her earlier complaint, leading to an investigation into the police's response.

The assault occurred near Madhav Club in Dawa Bazar. The victim, identified as Pooja alias Gungun, a first-year B.A. student from Bapu Nagar, was en route to her job as a computer operator at a pharmacy when she encountered the accused, 21-year-old Sunil Jaroliya.

According to police reports, the two exchanged a few words before Jaroliya suddenly brandished a knife and attacked her multiple times.

CCTV footage captured the brutal assault, which lasted under a minute, resulting in 14 stab wounds to the victim's abdomen, neck, and hands, causing panic among bystanders in the busy market.

Local residents quickly came to her aid and transported her to the district hospital, from where she was later referred to Patidar Hospital, where her condition remains critical.

Ujjain Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma stated that the accused had been persistently harassing the victim after she ceased communication with him.

Jaroliya was arrested shortly after the incident but sustained a leg fracture while attempting to flee. He is currently receiving medical treatment and will be interrogated before being presented in court.

During police questioning, the suspect revealed that he had befriended the victim on Instagram about four years ago and expressed frustration over her lack of response to his calls in the past ten days.

Authorities noted that the victim's family, especially her mother, disapproved of the relationship. Senior police officials are reviewing the actions of the officers who managed the June 15 complaint, with potential disciplinary measures pending if negligence is confirmed.
