Cristiano Ronaldo's Role in Portugal's World Cup Plans Amid Injury Concerns
Ronaldo's Importance to the National Team
Robert Martinez, the head coach of Portugal, has emphasized that Cristiano Ronaldo continues to play a vital role in the national team's strategy as they prepare for the FIFA World Cup, despite facing an injury.
Ronaldo was unable to join the national squad for the friendly matches against Mexico and the USA due to an injury sustained during a Saudi Pro League game with Al Nassr in February.
In their first friendly, Portugal managed a 0-0 draw against Mexico, and they are set to face the USA next at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
'An Exemplary Captain'
Ahead of the upcoming match, Martinez praised Ronaldo as a 'role model' who is 'eager to improve daily and inspires younger players.'
Martinez stated, 'Cristiano is our captain, a role model, and a player with genuine hunger.' He highlighted Ronaldo's determination as he aims for World Cup success in his sixth tournament appearance. 'He is not merely a 41-year-old player; he is someone who strives to enhance his game every day, serving as an exemplary captain and a beacon for younger teammates, embodying our values.'
Martinez also noted Ronaldo's impressive record, having scored 25 goals in the last 30 matches, and mentioned that player evaluations are conducted regularly to maintain high standards within the national team.
Injury Update
According to Martinez, Ronaldo is currently training separately in Saudi Arabia but is expected to return to action next week, with the coach describing the injury as 'not serious.'
'He has a minor injury and is likely to resume playing and training next week. It is nothing serious. Cristiano is our captain and a crucial player, especially in the final third of the game, contributing significantly to movement in the box,' he added.
Future Remains Uncertain
Ronaldo holds the record as Portugal's all-time leading goal scorer, netting 143 goals in 226 appearances since his debut in 2003.
Martinez mentioned that Ronaldo has not discussed any retirement plans with the team, stating, 'As a head coach, I've quickly learned not to predict the future with Cristiano.'
'The end of his career? It's difficult to say. I've learned not to try and foresee the future with him. He concentrates on being the best version of himself right now and does not make future plans,' he concluded.
