Jota tragically lost his life in a car accident in Zamora, Spain, last July. Both Neves and Ronaldo had previously played alongside Jota for the Portuguese national team.

After the match, Neves expressed his disappointment to reporters, stating, "I just hope they don't go to pray later after what they did." He emphasized, "The league must take action and punish this kind of fan behavior. This is no longer football, and there have to be limits. People who behave like this should never be allowed to enter a stadium again."

Neves and Jota shared a strong bond, having played together in Portugal's youth teams before both joining Wolverhampton Wanderers in England. Neves honored Jota's memory by serving as a pallbearer at his funeral and took over his number 21 jersey for the national team last year.
