Crisis in Sudan: Millions Face Acute Food Insecurity Amid Ongoing Conflict

The United Nations reports that nearly 19.5 million people in Sudan are experiencing severe food insecurity due to ongoing conflict. With 14 regions at risk of famine, conditions are expected to worsen during the upcoming lean season. Humanitarian aid efforts are critically insufficient, with only a fraction of those in need receiving assistance. The FAO, WFP, and UNICEF are calling for an immediate end to hostilities and increased international funding for essential services. United Nations, May 16: According to a spokesperson from the United Nations, approximately 19.5 million individuals in Sudan are currently experiencing critical levels of acute food insecurity. This alarming statistic comes from reports by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), and UNICEF.

Fourteen regions, particularly in Greater Darfur and Greater Kordofan, are at risk of famine, with conditions expected to worsen during the lean season from June to September, as noted by Farhan Haq, the deputy spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, during a briefing on Friday.

He emphasized that humanitarian aid is severely lacking in comparison to the overwhelming needs of the population.

From February to May, humanitarian organizations aimed to assist 4.8 million individuals each month; however, only about 3.13 million received help in February, according to Haq.

The FAO, WFP, and UNICEF have urgently called for an end to hostilities and requested the international community to significantly increase funding for food, emergency food production, nutrition, health, and water and sanitation services, as well as initiatives to restore livelihoods.

On May 13, UN humanitarian agencies reported that aid is being delivered in conflict-affected southwestern Sudan, with $12 million allocated for famine relief efforts in neighboring South Sudan.

"The UN and its humanitarian partners are actively addressing the humanitarian needs throughout Sudan," stated the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

In the Kordofan region, aid organizations are providing essential support to displaced individuals, refugees, and local communities, with water and sanitation assistance reaching around 85,000 people in Sheikan and Ar Rahad, located in North Kordofan.

Additionally, humanitarian groups distributed blankets, mosquito nets, and other essential items to 2,000 displaced families in Sheikan, while cash assistance was provided to 200 families in the Taggat displacement site in April.

OCHA reported that nearly 88,000 individuals in South Kordofan, including South Sudanese refugees and displaced persons, received water and sanitation support. However, the ongoing conflict continues to pose significant risks to civilians.
