Overview of Rajya Sabha MPs' Criminal Records and Wealth


Guwahati, Mar 19: A recent report from the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) reveals that approximately 32% of the current Rajya Sabha members have reported criminal cases against themselves, while 14% are classified as billionaires.


This analysis is derived from the affidavits of 229 out of the 233 Rajya Sabha MPs, noting that one seat from Jharkhand remains vacant and affidavits for three MPs were not accessible. The study includes 37 members who were recently elected.


Out of the 229 MPs examined, 73 (32%) have acknowledged criminal cases, with 36 (16%) facing serious allegations. Notably, one MP has reported a murder charge, four are implicated in attempted murder cases, and three have charges related to crimes against women.


Breaking it down by party, 27 out of 99 BJP MPs, 12 of 28 Congress MPs, four of 13 TMC MPs, and four of 10 AAP MPs have admitted to having criminal cases. Additionally, three MPs from both CPI(M) and BRS have disclosed similar cases.


The report also highlights that 31 MPs (14%) possess a net worth in the billions. Among the prominent parties, six BJP MPs, five Congress MPs, four YSRCP MPs, two AAP MPs, two BRS MPs, and three NCP MPs have assets exceeding Rs 100 crore.


The average wealth of a Rajya Sabha MP is reported to be Rs 120.69 crore. When looking at major parties, the average assets per MP are Rs 28.29 crore for BJP, Rs 128.61 crore for Congress, Rs 17.70 crore for TMC, and a staggering Rs 574.09 crore for AAP. Other parties include YSRCP (Rs 522.63 crore), SP (Rs 399.71 crore), BJD (Rs 105.63 crore), and DMK (Rs 11.90 crore).


Among the wealthiest, BRS MP Bandi Partha Saradhi tops the list with assets exceeding Rs 5,300 crore, followed closely by AAP's Rajinder Gupta at over Rs 5,053 crore, and YSRCP's Alla Ayodhya Rami Reddy with assets surpassing Rs 2,577 crore.


Conversely, AAP MP Sant Balbir Singh is noted as the least wealthy, with assets around Rs 3 lakh. He is followed by Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba of Manipur, who has approximately Rs 5 lakh, and TMC's Prakash Chik Baraik, with assets nearing Rs 9 lakh.
