Sergey Aksyonov, the pro-Moscow governor of Crimea, stated that the emergency status was implemented to enhance coordination and response efforts following the sustained aerial assaults across the region. He shared this information via Telegram, indicating that decrees declaring a regional emergency in Crimea and Sevastopol have been signed.
Major Drone Assault Recorded
This declaration comes after what is reported to be one of the most extensive drone attacks on Russian-controlled areas, including Crimea and various regions in Russia. The Russian defense ministry reported that air defense systems intercepted 660 Ukrainian drones overnight across 12 regions, as well as over the Black Sea and Sea of Azov. This attack surpassed a previous record of 556 drones recorded in May, although the ministry did not disclose specific details regarding damage or targeted locations.
Strikes on Naval and Radar Assets Confirmed
Ukraine's Security Service has claimed responsibility for strikes targeting Russian naval vessels and radar systems in the strategically significant Kerch area of Crimea, which connects the peninsula to mainland Russia. The agency reported that reconnaissance and mine-laying ships, including the Volga and Vyatka, along with the ferry Petropavlovsk, were struck, resulting in fires. These claims have not been independently verified.
Escalation of Drone Warfare
This recent escalation highlights Ukraine's growing dependence on long-range drone operations aimed at military, energy, and logistics infrastructure deep within Russian-controlled territories. Analysts suggest that this campaign is increasing pressure on Russian supply chains and military operations while disrupting fuel and infrastructure networks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy mentioned that he has initiated a '40-day influence operation,' which includes expanded long-range strikes to intensify pressure on Moscow as previous peace negotiations have stalled. He also noted that he secured additional military support commitments during the recent G7 summit, including backing from US President Donald Trump, which he believes will enhance Ukraine's capabilities on the battlefield.
