Urgent Repairs Needed for Deteriorating NH-27 Tunnel in Haflong

Haflong, Sept 5: Local residents and travelers are increasingly worried about the poor state of National Highway-27 at Nriambanglo, especially within the tunnel of the Silchar-Saurashtra East-West Corridor.
The tunnel's road surface has significantly deteriorated, with the bitumen eroded in multiple areas, leading to the formation of large potholes. Some of these potholes are so deep that they create a serious hazard for vehicles navigating through the tunnel.
According to frequent travelers and locals, this damaged section has been neglected for an extended period, with minimal efforts made for repairs. They reported that accidents have already occurred due to vehicles falling into these potholes. The situation is particularly perilous at night, as visibility is poor, making it challenging for drivers to identify and avoid the damaged areas.
Discussions regarding the highway's condition have reportedly taken place at the administrative level. Several meetings have been held involving the Dima Hasao district administration, the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council, and representatives from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). However, commuters claim there has been a lack of urgency in addressing the repairs needed for the Nriambanglo tunnel.
Additionally, other segments of NH-27 between Hatikhali and Nriambanglo are also said to be in bad shape. In various locations, the road surface has deteriorated, and large potholes have emerged. Residents noted that the situation has worsened following the recent monsoon rains.
Commuters have expressed frustration over the toll collection at Mandardisa while road maintenance remains inadequate. They argue that if tolls are being charged, the highway should be kept in a safe and drivable condition.
NH-27 serves as a crucial route linking the hilly regions of Dima Hasao with Silchar and other areas of the Barak Valley, with thousands of passengers and freight vehicles relying on it daily.
Residents and travelers are calling on the NHAI to promptly inspect the Nriambanglo tunnel and the damaged sections between Hatikhali and Nriambanglo, urging for necessary repairs to be carried out without delay.
They emphasized the need for immediate action to fix the hazardous potholes before a serious accident occurs.
