North Lakhimpur, April 4: Authorities are currently searching for a woman who was seen with a man accused of murdering his six-year-old daughter on a moving train in Assam's Lakhimpur district.

The suspect, identified as Sunil Murmu from Gogamukh in Dhemaji district, was taken into custody on Friday after a dramatic pursuit by local residents.

This tragic event occurred on the 15813 Dekargaon–Murkongselek passenger train, specifically between the Kathalpukhuri and Silanibari stations.

According to officials from the Northeast Frontier Railway, Murmu allegedly used a sharp object to attack his daughter during the journey, resulting in her death. The child's remains were later found in one of the train's compartments.

Witnesses described the horrifying moments leading up to the incident, noting that the girl had been asking her father for snacks just before the attack.

One witness recounted finding the decapitated body of the girl in an otherwise vacant compartment, with Murmu still present and wielding a machete.

“When I confronted him, he reportedly tried to attack me as well,” the witness stated.

Murmu then allegedly jumped off the train near Gate No. 46 at Silanibari railway station and attempted to escape.

Villagers chased him for several kilometers before finally capturing him in Sariyahbari village. He was subsequently returned to Silanibari station, where police took him into custody.

Investigators are considering the possibility that Murmu may be suffering from mental health issues, although this has not yet been confirmed.

Authorities are also working to identify a woman who was traveling with Murmu and the child during the incident, as her involvement remains unclear.

Initial reports indicate that Murmu boarded the train earlier that morning at Borgang railway station in Biswanath district, leaving his wife and another daughter behind on the platform.

A thorough investigation is ongoing to clarify the events leading up to this tragic crime and to determine the motive behind it.
