Tragic Incident in Kerala: Man Attacks Wife and Takes His Own Life

Idukki, Oct 30: A shocking incident unfolded in Kerala's Idukki district on Friday morning when a 42-year-old man attacked his wife with an iron rod at her workplace and subsequently took his own life with a revolver outside the local post office in Kuzhitholu.
The victim, Sreeja, aged 35, who works as a temporary employee at the post office, sustained severe head injuries and is currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of a private hospital in Kattappana. Her condition remains critical.
The attacker, identified as Santhosh, arrived at the post office shortly after Sreeja began her shift, armed with an iron rod. An argument erupted between the couple inside the office, during which Santhosh allegedly struck Sreeja multiple times on the head with the rod, causing her serious injuries.
Her cries for help drew the attention of nearby residents, who rushed to assist. In a desperate act, Santhosh exited the building and shot himself in the head with a revolver he had brought along, dying instantly.
Local residents and police quickly transported Sreeja to a private hospital in Kattappana, where she was admitted to the ICU for her critical injuries.
Initial police investigations suggest that the incident stemmed from ongoing domestic disputes between the couple. Authorities suspect that Santhosh may have premeditated the attack.
Upon examining the firearm, police discovered that it was unlicensed. An investigation is underway to determine how Santhosh acquired the weapon and if anyone else assisted him in obtaining it.
The Kattappana police have registered a case and are actively investigating the matter. Following the inquest, Santhosh's body has been sent to the taluk hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
This violent episode at a public workplace and the subsequent suicide have left the local community in shock. Reports indicate that the couple had been experiencing marital issues for the past two years, and divorce proceedings were already in motion.
