Sivasagar, April 27: A tragic event unfolded in Banglaguri Line of Kharahat Tea Estate, where a mother is accused of murdering her four-year-old daughter, Rushita Kalindi, on Sunday, leading to widespread outrage among the community.

Reports indicate that the mother, Kalpana Kalindi, allegedly used a sharp object to slit her daughter's throat while the father was away at work.

After the incident, Kalpana reportedly attempted to take her own life by inflicting a similar injury on herself.

She was initially taken to Demow Model Hospital and subsequently transferred to Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh, where her condition is reported to be critical.

According to sources, the father was employed at a factory during the incident and rushed home upon receiving the news. He attempted to save his daughter by taking her to the hospital, but unfortunately, she could not be revived.

“This is an inhumane act. Around 11 am today, Kalpana Kalindi took her daughter's life and then tried to end her own,” stated a representative from the Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA).

The representative added that the father was not present during the incident and had been working when he received the alarming news.

“Upon returning home, he tried to save his daughter but faced threats from the mother, who brandished sharp weapons,” the member noted.

Community members suspect that financial difficulties related to self-help group loans, coupled with ongoing family conflicts, may have contributed to this tragic event.

The incident has raised significant concern within the tea garden community, prompting calls for a comprehensive investigation into the factors leading to this crime.

“We, the members of the Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA), demand a thorough investigation and urge the police to pursue this matter diligently,” emphasized an ATTSA member.
