Drowning Incident in Pagladia River

The trio reportedly slipped into a deep pit in the river and drowned.

Nalbari, Apr 20: A tragic incident occurred on Saturday when three individuals drowned in the Pagladia River at Nijbor Shiral Katahbari, located under the jurisdiction of Ghograpar Police Station in Nalbari district while they were bathing.

Reports indicate that Gudu Deka, a 35-year-old woman from the area, had invited her sister and her fiancé, who had traveled from Guwahati, to join her.

On the day of the incident, Gudu Deka, along with her sister Pinki Das, aged 24, and her fiancé Rohit Gutung, 27, went for a swim in the river.

Unfortunately, they slipped into a deep section of the river and drowned. Local residents, alerted by the cries of a child on the riverbank, rushed to the scene and managed to rescue the trio, who were in critical condition.

They were quickly transported to Nalbari Medical College and Hospital, where they were pronounced dead by medical staff.

“A small child was crying on the riverbank. Locals rushed after hearing it. After several hours of effort, the three were rescued and immediately taken to the hospital,” recounted a local resident.

Community members expressed concerns that ongoing embankment construction and sand extraction in the river may have contributed to the formation of a deep pit at the site, which led to this tragic event.

“An embankment work is going on and sand is being excavated from the river. The pits formed due to excavation might have led to the deaths,” stated another resident.

Residents have called for a review of the construction practices and urged authorities to implement necessary safety measures. “The embankment is for the people, but the concerned department should have monitored how the work is being carried out and ensured safety after excavation,” added a local.
