Dehradun, May 30: A devastating accident occurred early Saturday morning in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district, resulting in the deaths of three family members and injuries to three others when their vehicle fell into a gorge approximately 400 to 500 meters deep.

The incident transpired around 5:50 a.m. in a forested area close to Lwani village. Officials reported that the vehicle lost control and plunged into the gorge, prompting an immediate rescue operation involving local police, disaster response teams, and administrative personnel.

Sub-Inspector Sandeep Devrani, overseeing the Dewal Police Outpost, alerted the Station House Officer (SHO) of Tharali about the vehicle's fall into the gorge. The SHO, along with a police team, promptly headed to the scene, while the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Tharali was notified to dispatch a District Disaster Response Force (DDRF) team for assistance.

Upon arrival and initial investigations, it was revealed that Balbir Singh, a resident of Bank village in the Lohajung area, was returning home after a family bereavement.

Officials stated that the body of Bhajan Singh was being transported to their village in a private ambulance after he passed away in Dehradun during treatment. Balbir Singh and other family members were traveling in a separate vehicle to attend the final rites.

At the time of the accident, six individuals were in the vehicle. Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver may have dozed off, leading to the vehicle's loss of control and subsequent plunge into the gorge. Authorities are continuing to investigate the precise cause of the accident.

The deceased have been identified as Balbir Singh (52), his wife Shanti Devi (48), and their son Anshu Bisht (18). The injured passengers include Kavita Devi (32), Mayank Singh (8), and Roshni (18).

Rescue teams successfully retrieved the injured individuals from the gorge and transported them to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Officials confirmed that the injured are currently receiving necessary care.

The rescue operation was a collaborative effort involving police, DDRF personnel, and local administration, who worked tirelessly for several hours to evacuate the victims and clear the accident site.

Authorities are conducting all necessary legal procedures, and further investigations into the incident are ongoing.
