Guwahati, April 11: Shyamkanu Mahanta, the main suspect in the case concerning the death of the renowned Assamese artist Zubeen Garg, has submitted a new bail request.
This bail application was presented to the designated special sessions fast-track court on Friday, with the defense initially requesting an expedited hearing on April 13.
However, Special Public Prosecutor Ziaur Kamar informed that the court has set the hearing for April 22.
“They aimed for the hearing to occur on April 13, but the court has scheduled it for April 22. We will be opposing the bail,” Kamar stated.
Mahanta, who is among the primary accused, had previously sought bail but later retracted his request.
This latest application arises at a pivotal moment in the trial, which is being conducted on a daily basis to ensure swift proceedings.
On April 1, Assam Advocate General Devajit Saikia noted that the investigation and trial are advancing steadily, with the case currently at a significant juncture, including discussions on discharge petitions.
The court has initiated hearings with a requirement for daily trials, highlighting the sensitivity and public significance of the case.
Family members of the deceased have previously expressed optimism that the fast-track process would facilitate timely justice, while the state has reiterated its dedication to a fair and prompt trial.
