Aizawl, Jul 13: Continuous heavy rainfall has led to flooding and landslides across various districts in Mizoram, prompting the local government to advise tourists to delay their travel plans for safety reasons, officials reported on Monday.
In Tlabung town and surrounding areas in the Lunglei district, which borders Bangladesh, at least 100 families have been evacuated due to the rising waters of the Khawthlangtuipui River.
The tourism department issued a notice urging visitors from outside the state to refrain from traveling to Mizoram until the weather improves.
Those with existing travel arrangements have been asked to reconsider their plans, as ongoing adverse weather conditions could lead to further disruptions and pose significant risks to their safety.
This advisory comes after several days of relentless rain that has caused widespread damage, including overflowing rivers, landslides, and infrastructure issues in multiple areas.
Approximately 200 travelers are currently stranded in Bualte village due to a significant landslide on National Highway 54, which connects Lawngtlai and Siaha districts.
Efforts to clear the debris using heavy machinery have been hampered by continuous rainfall, which has triggered additional mudslides, according to officials.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Serchhip received the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours at 34 mm, followed by Khawzawl with 17.5 mm and Siaha at 16.5 mm.
Aizawl recorded 8.4 mm, while Lunglei experienced 14 mm of rainfall during the same timeframe.
On the night of July 10, when the rain briefly subsided, authorities managed to partially clear some roads, allowing a few vehicles to pass.
However, fresh rainfall quickly obstructed the roads again, and efforts are ongoing to restore vehicular access, officials stated.
The debris from a significant landslide at Ngaizel, located on the southern outskirts of Aizawl, remains uncleared, continuing to block the Aizawl-Thenzawl-Lunglei highway, according to police reports.
Additionally, the swollen Mat River has inundated several agricultural lands in the Serchhip district, officials noted.
