Mizoram Court Sentences Mother to 12 Years for Exploiting Daughter

Kolasib, Aug 7: A fast-track court in the Kolasib district of Mizoram has handed down a 12-year rigorous imprisonment sentence to a 42-year-old woman for repeatedly compelling her minor daughter into sexual exploitation in exchange for money and alcohol.
This conviction arises from a case initiated at the Kawnpui Police Station following a First Information Report (FIR) filed on August 5, 2024.
As per police reports, the victim's mother allegedly coerced her daughter into prostitution multiple times between January 2023 and July 2024.
During the investigation, authorities apprehended the main accused, Lalbiakengi (42), a resident of Kawnpui, along with co-accused Indra Bahadur Bandhari Chhetri (80) from Kutbul.
Police claimed that the accused frequently sent the minor to truck drivers from outside the state and railway construction workers for sexual exploitation, receiving approximately Rs 500 and alcohol in return.
The alleged offenses took place on several occasions in and around Kutbul and New Khamrang in Kawnpui.
Upon concluding the investigation, police submitted a chargesheet to the Kolasib court.
During the trial, the court reviewed testimonies from seven prosecution witnesses, including the victim, and considered medical evidence, the complainant's statements, and the accounts of the investigating officer and other witnesses.
Judge R. Vanlalena of the fast-track court found the prosecution's evidence compelling and convicted Lalbiakengi under the applicable sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The court sentenced her to five years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 96 of the BNS, another five years under Section 98 of the BNS, and two years under Section 77 of the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act for providing alcohol to a minor.
A fine of Rs 15,000 was also imposed, with an additional six months' imprisonment for failure to pay. Since the sentences are to be served consecutively, the total imprisonment term amounts to 12 years.
Meanwhile, proceedings against co-accused Indra Bahadur Bandhari Chhetri were halted following his death on February 3, 2025, during the trial, leading to no further legal actions against him.
