New Delhi, Aug 3: A 53-year-old individual has been taken into custody for the suspected murder of his wife in the Jagatpuri area of East Delhi, following a prolonged dispute over property. Authorities reported that Rs 12.75 lakh in cash was seized from him, categorizing the incident as a premeditated act.
Police received a call on July 30 from Gaurav Singh, who claimed that his father had killed his mother. Responding swiftly, officers arrived at the family's residence in Gagan Vihar, where they discovered the body of Komal Singh, aged 50, lying in a pool of blood near a sofa. A pair of blood-stained scissors, believed to be the murder weapon, was found on a table inside the home.
During initial inquiries, Gaurav Singh informed the police that he had left for his library in Noida around 9:30 a.m., while his sister, Gaurika Singh, departed for work at approximately 10:30 a.m. Before their departures, both siblings witnessed a heated argument between their parents concerning the registration of a property in Jagatpuri.
As the day progressed, the children were unable to reach their mother despite multiple attempts. Gaurav returned home around 9:15 p.m., used his key to unlock the flat, and found his mother with multiple injuries in a pool of blood. He immediately contacted the police.
Following his report, an FIR (No. 289/2026) was filed on July 31 under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), prompting a thorough investigation.
The case was assigned to Inspector Surendra Sharma, with several teams from Jagatpuri Police Station and the Shahdara District Special Staff mobilized to locate the suspect. The operation was led by Jagatpuri Police Station SHO, Inspector Abhishek, and Inspector Ashish, head of the Special Staff, under the oversight of ACP Vivek Vihar, Mahender Singh, and senior district officials.
Nearly ten teams were deployed across various locations as directed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Shahdara, to track down the suspect.
Investigators utilized scientific techniques, technical surveillance, and extensive CCTV analysis. They meticulously reviewed footage from cameras positioned around the neighborhood and along potential escape routes.
According to police, CCTV footage confirmed that after the children left, only the accused and the victim remained in the apartment. Investigators also reported capturing a woman's scream during the relevant timeframe. Subsequent footage allegedly showed the suspect hiding the weapon in a bag before exiting the residence.
A financial investigation indicated that the accused had withdrawn nearly Rs 7 lakh from his bank accounts shortly before going into hiding.
Using technical surveillance and intelligence, police tracked the suspect's movements from Delhi towards Gorakhpur. Investigators noted that he initially intended to escape to Nepal but later altered his route towards Mathura to evade capture.
Acting on precise technical information and continuous surveillance, police apprehended the suspect, identified as Kamal Singh, son of Ajab Singh and a resident of Gagan Vihar, Delhi, near Mathura Railway Station while he was allegedly trying to avoid arrest.
Upon his arrest, police recovered Rs 12.75 lakh in cash from him, which was seized following legal protocols.
During questioning, Kamal Singh reportedly confessed to orchestrating the murder due to ongoing property disputes. He claimed to have purchased the weapon in advance from Hari Nagar and attempted to hide it after the crime to eliminate evidence.
Police stated that the accused mentioned being influenced by the Hollywood crime series 'The Staircase' and believed that disposing of the weapon would prevent his detection. He also expressed intentions to gain control over family properties.
Investigators revealed that on August 2, the suspect attempted to flee towards Nepal, thinking police surveillance near the Indo-Nepal border had lessened. However, technical surveillance and intelligence allowed officers to intercept and arrest him near Mathura Railway Station.
Kamal Singh is an Electronics and Communication Engineer working as a freelance SAP software consultant.
The couple's daughter, Gaurika Singh, works as a German language trainer for a private firm in Noida, while their son, Gaurav Singh, has completed his MBBS from CIMS, Lucknow, and is currently preparing for postgraduate medical entrance exams.
In addition to the cash, police also recovered a scooter, which the accused allegedly used to flee after committing the crime. Officials stated that further recoveries and forensic examinations are ongoing as part of the investigation.
