Incident Overview

Representational Image

Kolkata, July 16: Authorities in Kolkata have apprehended a man accused of repeatedly raping a woman and blackmailing her with private images and videos, as reported by police on Thursday.

Details of the Case

The FIR was filed after the survivor reported the incidents. Initially lodged at Metiabruz Police Station, the case was later moved to Bansdroni Police Station, where the alleged assaults took place. An investigation has been initiated by the police.

The woman stated that she met the accused through social media approximately seven years ago, leading to a friendship that deepened during the Covid-19 lockdown.

From 2021, the accused allegedly took her to various locations outside Kolkata under the guise of traveling together, where he sexually assaulted her in hotel rooms. He reportedly recorded explicit content of her and used it to manipulate her into maintaining the relationship, threatening to share the material on social media and with her friends if she resisted.

Escalation of Abuse

The complainant indicated that the harassment escalated over time. Recently, the accused allegedly took her to a hotel in the Joka area, where he assaulted her overnight while intoxicated. She claimed he forced her to walk naked from her room to the hotel balcony.

After managing to leave the hotel the next morning in a distressed state, she returned home and, with her family's support, reported the incidents to the police earlier this week.

Police Action

Initially, a Zero FIR was registered at Metiabruz Police Station, and following a preliminary investigation, the case was transferred to Bansdroni Police Station due to the connection of the accused and the offenses to that area.

A senior officer from Kolkata Police confirmed, "A case has been registered based on the woman's complaint, and an investigation is underway. Efforts are ongoing to locate the accused."
