Gossaigaon, July 17: In a significant operation, four individuals suspected of being contract killers were apprehended in Gossaigaon, Assam, on Thursday night. The arrests followed reports from vigilant villagers who noticed the armed men behaving suspiciously in Ballamguri village and promptly alerted law enforcement.
The Gossaigaon Police acted on a tip-off regarding the presence of unknown individuals in the vicinity. Upon investigation, officers seized a homemade pistol along with live ammunition from the suspects.
The arrested individuals have been named as Dharambir Gautam, Bikash Choudhury, Suraj Gautam, and Nizamis Ali, all hailing from Basti district in Uttar Pradesh.
Initial inquiries by the police suggest that these men may have entered Assam with the intention of carrying out a contract killing. Authorities are currently investigating who commissioned them, their intended victim, and any potential connections to local criminal organizations.
A senior police official revealed that intelligence reports had indicated the possible arrival of outsiders aiming to incite unrest in the area about two weeks prior.
"We received intelligence approximately 15 to 20 days ago regarding potential outsiders entering the region to stir trouble. Following this, we conducted searches at various hotels and locations but found no leads. However, around 9 PM today, we received new information about suspicious individuals in Ballamguri. Acting swiftly, our team apprehended four suspects identified as Dharambir Gautam, Bikash Choudhury, Suraj Gautam, and Nizamis Ali from Basti district. We recovered a homemade pistol and live cartridges from them. Our initial findings indicate they were here to execute a contract killing. The investigation is ongoing to determine their motives, identify the target, and ascertain who sent them," the official stated.
Local residents expressed their concerns after spotting the armed men and quickly notified the police. They reported that the suspects were contained before law enforcement arrived to take them into custody.
"We observed three to four unfamiliar young men with what looked like firearms. Their actions raised our suspicions, prompting villagers to alert the police immediately. The Gossaigaon Police responded quickly and made the arrests. We demand a thorough investigation to uncover their purpose for entering our village, who sent them, and what their plans were," a local resident commented.
In light of these arrests, security measures have been heightened in and around Gossaigaon.
