Jorhat, May 20: A Congress politician from Assam's Sivasagar district has been taken into custody following his name's appearance in a suspected suicide note left by a businessman from the adjacent Charaideo district.
Ajoy Gogoi, who leads the Sivasagar District Congress Committee, was apprehended at his home in Dimow amid allegations connecting him to the demise of businessman Avani Baruah from Bishrampur, located within the Mahmora Assembly constituency.
Authorities reported that Baruah allegedly ingested pesticide and passed away after naming Gogoi and another individual, Binanda Bora from Khokamara, in a suicide note discovered during the investigation.
According to a police spokesperson from Charaideo, "Avani Baruah died after consuming pesticide, and prior to this tragic act, he mentioned two names in the note."
The note purportedly indicated that these two individuals were accountable for his death.
On May 18, an FIR was filed, leading to Gogoi's arrest, while Bora is currently evading capture.
"Following the FIR, we detained one suspect, Ajay Gogoi, while the other suspect, Binanda Bora, whose name appeared in the note, is on the run. We are actively investigating the situation," the official stated.
Kakotibari Police have opened a case numbered 9/26 and commenced an investigation under Sections 108, 351(2), and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Gogoi is presently undergoing questioning at the Sonari Police Station by Charaideo district authorities and is expected to be presented in court, according to officials.
In the meantime, police have initiated a search for Bora to ascertain his involvement in the case.
"We are looking into Binanda Bora's connection to the case. Ajay Gogoi has been arrested and will be brought before the court," the official concluded.
