Tezpur, Sept 4: The renowned Rudrapad in the Sonitpur district of Tezpur attracts numerous devotees and tourists year-round, thanks to its significant Shiva temple, which serves as both a religious site and a favored picnic spot. However, the adjacent cremation ground's deteriorating state has raised alarms among local residents.
The cremation ground is in disrepair, characterized by overgrown plants, litter, and a lack of essential facilities, making it challenging for families to conduct the last rites of their loved ones with the dignity they deserve.
This issue was brought to light by local nature enthusiast Saurav Borkataky, who observed the cremation ground's condition while attending a funeral service for a community member.
Borkataky informed a media outlet that, to his knowledge, funds had been allocated by the government for the cremation ground, yet no significant modernization efforts have been implemented.
He noted that the lack of proper facilities often compels families to carry out last rites along the banks of the Brahmaputra River.
“The situation worsens during the monsoon season. Heavy rains and strong river currents pose a risk of washing away funeral pyres lit near the riverbank,” he explained.
Residents have also expressed concerns regarding the cleanliness of the cremation ground, which is overrun with dense vegetation and waste.
“The lack of basic infrastructure and amenities creates significant challenges for those coming to perform last rites,” remarked a local resident.
While there are initiatives to enhance Rudrapad as a more appealing religious and tourist site, locals lament the neglected state of the cremation ground and have urged authorities to prioritize its improvement.
Borkataky has called upon the District Commissioner, the State Government, and relevant departments to take swift action to modernize the Rudrapad cremation ground and establish a safe, well-equipped facility. He also emphasized the need for regular maintenance and cleanliness of the area.
