CBI Arrests Railway Engineer for Alleged Bribery in Silchar
CBI Takes Action Against Corruption
Hojai, June 14: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended a Senior Section Engineer (SSE) from the Carriage and Wagon (C&W) Department of the Northeast Frontier (NF) Railway in Silchar for allegedly soliciting a bribe of ₹20,000.
As per a statement from the CBI, the arrest followed a complaint filed by a contractor on Saturday.
The contractor claimed that a bill amounting to around ₹20 lakh for completed work was awaiting approval.
When he approached the engineer on June 12 for the bill's clearance, the official purportedly demanded 1% of the bill, which equated to ₹20,000, as an illegal payment to process the transaction.
In response to the complaint, the CBI set up a sting operation to confirm the allegations. During this operation, the engineer was reportedly caught in the act of demanding and accepting the bribe from the contractor.
Following the successful operation, the CBI arrested the engineer and has begun further legal actions. The accused is expected to appear before a court in Guwahati on Sunday.
Investigations are ongoing, with searches being conducted at the engineer's residence. CBI officials are reviewing pertinent documents and evidence to uncover the full scope of the alleged corruption and to identify any other parties involved, according to the statement.
