Guwahati, July 3: On Monday, the Assam government commenced the distribution of interim financial support to families impacted by floods, with each eligible household receiving Rs 15,000 as part of a comprehensive relief initiative.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, currently visiting the most severely affected districts in Upper Assam, initiated the first round of disbursements from the Chief Minister's Office in Dibrugarh before proceeding to Sivasagar to assess the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts.
Sarma noted that the initial payments have been made to 62,696 families across four districts, emphasizing the importance of immediate financial support for those working to restore their lives post-flood.
He mentioned, "As per the reports from the Deputy Commissioners, the number of affected families is projected to rise to 75,000. We are prepared to transfer funds to an additional 15,000 families as soon as we receive their bank account information from the Deputy Commissioners, either later today or tomorrow."
The Chief Minister indicated that the beneficiaries include 35,298 families in Sivasagar, 19,883 in Charaideo, 4,922 in Jorhat, and 2,593 in Golaghat.
Later, Sarma visited Nepali Khuti in Sivasagar district to oversee relief and rehabilitation operations and engage with residents affected by the floods.
Meanwhile, the death toll from the catastrophic floods in Upper Assam has risen to 86, with four additional fatalities reported in Sivasagar on Monday.
Despite the recent deaths, the overall flood situation has shown signs of improvement, with the number of affected individuals decreasing to 1.36 lakh, according to official reports.
District authorities are currently managing 54 relief camps and distribution centers, offering shelter and essential aid to 13,771 individuals.
The Dhansiri River remains above the danger mark at Numaligarh, while 15,422 hectares of farmland are still inundated across the impacted districts.
Over the past two days, the flood situation has significantly improved. On Saturday, approximately 1.8 lakh people were affected across five districts, with Sivasagar reporting over 55,000 affected individuals, followed by Charaideo with around 40,000 and Jorhat with nearly 22,000.
