Madikeri (Karnataka), April 22: A distressing case of sexual assault involving an American tourist has emerged from the Madikeri district in Karnataka.

Karnataka's Home Minister G. Parameshwara announced on Wednesday that there were attempts to suppress the details of the incident, but these efforts were thwarted by law enforcement.
Details of the Assault
The alleged assault occurred at a private homestay named 'Devi Villa' in Kutta village, Ponnampet taluk, shortly after the woman checked in on April 19. The suspect, identified as Vrujesh Kumar from Jharkhand, has been arrested following the woman's complaint.
Further Arrests
Authorities have also detained the homestay owner, Vishal, in connection with the case, as confirmed by officials.

Minister's Statement
Home Minister G. Parameshwara remarked that immediate action was taken once the police were informed. He emphasized the need for proper licensing for homestays and adherence to established standard operating procedures (SOPs) to prevent such incidents.
He stated, “Such occurrences tarnish the image of our state and society, especially when they involve foreign nationals. Therefore, stringent measures are essential, and we are committed to enforcing them.”
Previous Incidents
This incident recalls a similar attack in March 2023, where a group of tourists, including an Israeli woman, faced violence while stargazing near the Tungabhadra canal in Hampi. The attackers assaulted the male tourists and allegedly gang-raped two women, including the Israeli tourist. The perpetrators were apprehended and charged with serious offenses, leading to a death penalty for three of them.
