Acid Attack on 18-Year-Old in Assam: Investigation Underway

Goalpara, Oct 6: An 18-year-old woman was reportedly the victim of an acid attack while she was asleep in her home located in Besimari village, Dudhnoi, within Assam's Goalpara district. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, and authorities suspect it may be linked to a dispute over a romantic relationship.
Victim's Condition and Family's Allegations
The victim, named Ramita Rabha, sustained multiple injuries from the attack. Her family has claimed that there was also an attempt to set their house ablaze following the acid assault.
Arrests Made
Law enforcement officials have apprehended two individuals in connection with the case, including Ramita's boyfriend, Mostev Rabha, who is considered the primary suspect. Another suspect, Bikram Rabha, believed to be an accomplice, has also been taken into custody. Both are currently being interrogated by the police.
“We have arrested two individuals related to the acid attack, one of whom is the victim's boyfriend. We have conducted interviews with those present during the incident to gather more information regarding the suspects' involvement,” stated CDSP Nupur Ranjan Naug.
Medical Response and Investigation
The attack occurred around 2 AM, and Ramita was quickly transported to Goalpara Medical College and Hospital for medical attention. Authorities report that her condition is stable.
“My niece was asleep when the acid was thrown on her at approximately 2 AM. She has suffered numerous injuries, and there was also an attempt to burn down our home. We seek justice for her,” expressed Ramita's uncle.
Evidence Collected
In the aftermath of the incident, police conducted a search at the residence of the accused, recovering a vehicle believed to have been used in the attack, along with two bottles containing acid.
“The acid found appears to be of the type utilized in rubber plantations. We are investigating its source and whether it was indeed used in this attack,” Naug added.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have indicated that Ramita has provided information about other individuals during the investigation, and those individuals have also been questioned.
“We are in the process of recording her statement and analyzing all the details she has shared. A thorough investigation will clarify the sequence of events and the involvement of each person,” Naug stated.
Initial findings suggest that the incident stems from a personal dispute related to a romantic relationship. However, officials noted that the precise motive and circumstances will be determined as the investigation progresses.
