Cricket's Olympic Comeback: A New Era for the Sport
Cricket's Return to the Olympics
Graeme Smith, the former captain of South Africa and current commissioner of the SA20 league, has highlighted the significance of cricket's reentry into the Olympics, emphasizing the event's esteemed status in the sports arena. He shared his insights during an interview with Olympics.com.
A Major Step for Global Expansion
The inclusion of cricket in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles marks a pivotal moment for the sport's international growth. This will be only the second time cricket has featured in the Olympics since its debut in 1900, where only Great Britain and France competed in a two-day match, with Great Britain taking home the gold medal. The sport's Olympic presence reflects its increasing popularity, especially with women's cricket making its Commonwealth Games debut in Birmingham in 2022. Both men's and women's cricket have been part of the Asian Games since 2010, 2014, and 2023.
A New Dream for Cricketers
With the rise of franchise leagues like the Indian Premier League (IPL), SA20, Big Bash League (BBL), Pakistan Super League (PSL), International League T20 (ILT20), and Major League Cricket (MLC), Smith believes that Olympic participation could significantly transform cricket's future and broaden its audience. He noted, "For many years, the Olympics were not part of cricket's landscape. Players aspired to World Cups or IPL glory, but Olympic medals were not on their radar."
Smith referenced Novak Djokovic's impressive gold medal win at the 2024 Paris Olympics, stating that the Olympics maintain a unique prestige in various sports, even those with other major tournaments. He remarked, "For young cricketers today, the opportunity to win an Olympic gold medal introduces a fresh aspiration. It creates another dream for the upcoming generation to pursue."
LA 2028 Cricket Tournament Details

The medal matches are scheduled for July 20 (women's) and July 29 (men's), with all games to be held at the Pomona Fairplex, located approximately 50 km from downtown Los Angeles.
