Biswanath, Sept 6: Authorities in Assam's Biswanath district have apprehended nine individuals suspected of being illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, including seven women, during recent police operations.
Asif Ahmed, the Senior Superintendent of Police, stated that the operation was initiated following intelligence reports received on Saturday regarding illegal immigration activities in the region.
The individuals detained have been identified as Nabijal Khatun, Sahara Khatun, Mamoni Begum, Rahima Begum, Champaful Khatun, Fatema Khatun, Akbar Ali, Nurjamal Sheikh, and Sahida Khatun.
Ahmed mentioned, “The Chief Minister has instructed us to take decisive action against illegal immigrants from Bangladesh who are entering and residing in various districts of Assam. Following the intelligence input, we have detained nine such individuals.”
The police are currently verifying the identities and citizenship statuses of those detained, after which legal proceedings will commence.
“The investigation is ongoing, and while we cannot disclose all details, the individuals were located in the Behali and Biswanath areas, where they have been living,” he added.
According to Ahmed, the detainees claim to have resided in Assam for several years. Efforts are underway to locate their family members and determine their current whereabouts.
“We will adhere to the State government's standard operating procedures and ensure that all individuals identified as foreigners will be required to leave Assam,” the SSP confirmed.
Additionally, Ahmed noted that the operation against fraudsters and other criminal elements is being conducted concurrently. Biswanath Police have arrested 11 individuals related to such cases, with further investigations ongoing.
“There are additional names on our list, and as we gather more evidence, we will take appropriate action against them as well,” he stated.
Ahmed warned that these arrests should not be perceived as the conclusion of the crackdown. “This is not the final operation; it will persist,” he emphasized.
The recent detentions follow a two-day conference led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on September 2 and 3, where strategies to combat illegal immigration and other criminal activities were discussed.
Ahmed reiterated that the crackdown is part of a broader initiative against fraudsters and criminal elements in the district.
“They should not assume this is the last operation. We will continue our efforts,” he concluded.
In total, Biswanath Police have arrested 11 individuals in connection with these cases, with investigations into others still in progress.
