CPI Urges Central Government to Address Assam's Flood Crisis as National Issue
CPI Calls for National Recognition of Assam's Flood Challenges
New Delhi, July 20: With the monsoon session of Parliament set to commence on Monday, the Communist Party of India (CPI) has urged the Central government to officially recognize the flooding crisis in Assam as a national issue.
During a statement made in New Delhi on Saturday, D Raja, the national general secretary of CPI, emphasized, “The Central government must consider the flood situation in Assam as a national crisis.”
Raja highlighted that floods and riverbank erosion have displaced thousands in Assam, yet the Central government has consistently overlooked calls to classify it as a national problem and assume full accountability, as noted in the party's political resolution.
The CPI unveiled a draft political resolution in New Delhi ahead of its 25th Congress, which is scheduled to occur in Chandigarh from September 21 to 25.
The resolution also pointed out that Bangladesh's increasing anti-India sentiments and its tacit support for foreign-backed initiatives, such as the US-endorsed proposal for a ‘Rakhine State’ near the Chittagong border, present a significant geostrategic challenge for India's Northeast.
“Such developments threaten to encircle the Northeast with unstable or hostile regions, potentially hindering India’s access and influence in the area. This situation necessitates an immediate and proactive response from the Central government, aimed at enhancing internal unity, promoting inter-ethnic harmony, countering separatist narratives, and bolstering national security infrastructure,” the resolution stated.
Furthermore, the resolution stressed the importance of mobilizing the democratic aspirations of the Northeast's populace through inclusive development and national integration to effectively address these complex challenges and protect India's territorial integrity.
It also called for the prompt resolution of border disputes in the northeastern states.
