COVID-19 Surge: India Prepares with Essential Resources Amid Rising Cases
Government's Response to COVID-19 Resurgence
New Delhi: In light of the increasing COVID-19 cases, all states have been directed to ensure the availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators, and necessary medications, as reported by official sources on Wednesday.
On June 2 and 3, a series of technical review meetings took place, led by Dr. Sunita Sharma, the Director General of Health Services (DGHS).
These discussions included representatives from various agencies such as the Disaster Management Cell, Emergency Management Response (EMR) Cell, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), and central hospitals in Delhi, along with delegates from all states and Union territories to assess the current COVID situation and preparedness.
Sources indicate that state and district surveillance units under IDSP are actively monitoring cases of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI).
"Testing is advised for all SARI cases admitted to hospitals and for 5% of ILI cases, following established guidelines. Positive SARI samples are sent for Whole Genome Sequencing through the ICMR VRDL network," an official source stated.
As of June 4, India has reported 4,302 active COVID-19 cases, with an increase of 864 cases in the last 24 hours.
Most of these cases are mild and are being managed at home, according to official sources.
Since January 1, there have been 44 reported deaths, primarily among individuals with pre-existing health conditions.
"States have been instructed to ensure the availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines," the source added.
A mock drill to assess oxygen supply systems, including PSA plants, LMO tanks, and MGPS lines, was conducted on June 2, with additional facility-level preparedness drills scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.
Officials have urged the public to maintain hand hygiene, practice cough etiquette, and avoid crowded places when feeling unwell. Individuals with acute respiratory symptoms should monitor their condition and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.
To prevent misinformation and rumors, it is advised to refer to trusted sources such as the health ministry's website and PIB releases.
"The Union health ministry is closely monitoring the situation and is dedicated to ensuring public health safety through timely interventions and effective communication," the source emphasized.
