COVID-19 Cases Surge in Several Indian States Amid Monitoring Efforts
COVID-19 Cases on the Rise
After months of low numbers, a resurgence of COVID-19 cases is being reported in various Indian states. Health departments in these regions are closely monitoring the situation and urging citizens to adhere to safety protocols, get tested if symptoms arise, and remain vigilant to prevent further spread of the virus.
First Case Reported in Arunachal Pradesh
On Wednesday, a senior health official announced the first COVID-19 case in Arunachal Pradesh during the current wave. State surveillance officer Lobsang Jampa revealed that a mother and daughter tested positive for the virus following RT-PCR tests conducted on Tuesday. The 34-year-old pregnant woman had shown symptoms of fever and mild cough, leading to a positive rapid antigen test on Monday.
Details of the Cases
Jampa confirmed, "We conducted RT-PCR testing on Tuesday, and the results came back positive." The woman had traveled from Bengaluru to Itanagar on May 13. Additionally, her 53-year-old mother also tested positive for COVID-19 via RT-PCR, although she is asymptomatic. The pregnant woman is currently receiving treatment in a hospital, while her mother has been placed in isolation.
Health Officials Remain Cautious
Jampa reassured the public not to panic, stating that the new strain is not as severe as previous variants. He mentioned, "The health department is keeping a close watch on the situation and taking all necessary precautions to prevent further spread of the virus." A comprehensive public health advisory will be issued soon in consultation with the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) based in Delhi.
Rising Cases in Other States
In Karnataka, 36 new cases were reported with a positivity rate of 9.44%, prompting officials to advise health workers to wear masks. Rajasthan confirmed nine new infections, including a 16-day-old infant, primarily from Jaipur and Jodhpur. Maharashtra recorded 66 new cases statewide, with 24 in Thane, where a COVID-related death recently occurred. Uttar Pradesh reported its first case in 17 months, involving a 60-year-old man from Lucknow who had recently returned from a pilgrimage.
