Guwahati, Oct 26: The fast-track court handling the case concerning the death of Assam’s cultural figure Zubeen Garg resumed its sessions on Monday following an extended festive break. This marked the first appearance of the accused, Sandipan Garg and Amritprava Mahanta, since they were granted bail.
Both individuals arrived separately, accompanied by their legal representatives, and chose not to engage with the media present at the court.
On the same day, Dev Borkotoky, the owner of NK Productions, a media and entertainment company based in Guwahati, provided testimony. He stated, “I was summoned to give my statement. I had previously shared my account with the SIT, and reiterated the same today. The defense questioned me, and I responded clearly. This case will proceed, and I hope my testimony is beneficial.”
Borkotoky underscored that receiving bail does not equate to being acquitted, affirming that the legal process will persist.
The court's activities resumed amidst rising public unrest in Assam regarding the case's developments and renewed calls for justice for Zubeen Garg, a beloved cultural icon in the region.
The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has organized statewide torchlight marches scheduled for October 29, advocating for peaceful and democratic protests.
AASU president Utpal Sarma expressed that public concern is escalating, particularly as more accused individuals are being granted bail. “The Chief Minister had labeled Zubeen Garg’s suspicious death as a ‘murder’. Yet, justice remains elusive, with one accused after another being released on bail. This has led to widespread anxiety among the populace,” Sarma remarked.
He noted that while public demonstrations had diminished somewhat after the case was brought to trial, the demand for justice has remained steadfast.
“Given the current circumstances, the public's frustration is resurfacing, compelling them to take to the streets once again. The agitation is gaining momentum,” he added.
