Court Acquits Former Wrestling Chief in Harassment Case Amid Controversy

On Monday, the Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi cleared former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and co-defendant Vinod Tomar of sexual harassment charges brought forth by female wrestlers. Background of the Case
The allegations against Brij Bhushan arose during his time as the head of the WFI. In 2023, the Delhi Police submitted a chargesheet accusing him of various offenses, including sexual harassment and intimidation. The case gained significant attention when female wrestlers protested at Jantar Mantar, leading to an FIR being lodged by the police. The chargesheet, which spanned 1500 pages, was filed on June 15, 2023, detailing the accusations under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Brij Bhushan maintained his innocence, alleging that false accusations are being weaponized for political gain. He described the situation as a conspiracy involving multiple political parties and criticized the trend of false allegations in the country. In a message to the protesting athletes, Singh encouraged them to reflect on their actions while acknowledging their right to appeal. He asserted that the accusations against him lacked factual support and urged the wrestlers to reconsider their stance.

Singh also refuted claims regarding administrative failures within the WFI, asserting that grievance mechanisms were in place and that the controversy was artificially created. He emphasized that committees existed to address complaints and that the situation had been misrepresented.
