The recent acquittal of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former head of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), in a high-profile sexual harassment case brought forth by female wrestlers has garnered significant attention. A Delhi court has cleared Brij Bhushan and co-accused Vinod Tomar, the former assistant secretary of WFI, of the charges. The ruling was delivered by Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Ashwini Pawar at the Rouse Avenue Court. However, this decision has not been well-received by the wrestlers; Vinesh Phogat expressed her disappointment immediately after the verdict.

Vinesh Phogat's Reaction

In a statement released shortly after the verdict, Vinesh Phogat claimed that the system is protecting Brij Bhushan, and several female wrestlers have instructed their legal team to file an appeal. She mentioned that it took immense courage to file an FIR against a powerful leader of the ruling party and to protest on the streets. Brij Bhushan allegedly used his influence to intimidate many girls into withdrawing their complaints. Nevertheless, several female wrestlers remained steadfast and continued their fight in court.

Concerns Over Judicial Outcome

Phogat expressed her sorrow over the court's decision not to find Brij Bhushan guilty of the sexual harassment allegations made by female wrestlers. From the outset, she noted that the entire governmental apparatus has been working to shield Brij Bhushan. This ruling marks a significant turning point in the controversy that began in 2023. Following the allegations, the Delhi police completed their investigation and filed a charge sheet against Brij Bhushan in June 2023. During that time, many prominent wrestlers protested at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Vinesh Phogat stated that this ruling does not signify the end of their struggle, as the wrestlers remain hopeful and plan to appeal against the decision.

In her statement, Phogat confirmed that the female wrestlers have directed their lawyers to appeal the decision, which will be filed as soon as possible. They have not lost hope and are determined to continue their fight.
