Local Elections in Arunachal Pradesh

On Saturday, the counting of votes for the panchayat and municipal corporation elections in Arunachal Pradesh commenced, with stringent security measures in place, as reported by officials.


According to Taru Talo, the Secretary of the State Election Commission (SEC), the counting began at 8 AM across 45 centers in 27 districts.


Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were utilized for the Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) and Pasighat Municipal Council (PMC) elections, while traditional ballots are being counted for the panchayat elections.


The counting process includes 186 seats for the District Panchayat Members (ZPM), with 59 candidates already elected unopposed out of a total of 245 seats.


In the Gram Panchayat (GP) category, 6,227 candidates were elected unopposed, while voting took place for the remaining 1,947 seats.


Talo noted that elections for 16 wards of the IMC and eight wards of the PMC were held on December 15, with four candidates from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Itanagar elected unopposed.


The voter turnout for the panchayat elections was approximately 75%, while the urban local body elections saw a turnout of 51.39% for the Itanagar Municipal Corporation and 60.95% for the Pasighat Municipal Council.
