Countdown to Badminton's Premier Event
As the BWF World Championships 2026 approaches in New Delhi, the Badminton Association of India (BAI) kicked off the official countdown on Sunday, marking just 50 days until the event.
Set to take place from August 17 to August 23 at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, this prestigious tournament will see participation from over 55 countries, featuring nearly 800 players, team officials, support staff, and media. This marks the event's return to India after a 17-year hiatus and its inaugural hosting in the national capital.
A Landmark Event for Indian Badminton
Himanta Biswa Sarma, President of BAI, emphasized the significance of the BWF World Championships, calling it a pivotal moment for Indian badminton. He stated, "This event is a chance to celebrate the impressive advancements in Indian badminton, demonstrate our ability to host world-class sporting events, and strengthen our commitment to enhancing the sporting ecosystem. It also showcases the international community's growing trust in India's capacity to organize top-tier events."
The 30th edition of the Championships will feature elite competitors across five categories: Men's Singles, Women's Singles, Men's Doubles, Women's Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. Sarma expressed confidence that this Championship will create a lasting legacy for badminton and inspire young Indians to aspire for greatness, furthering India's journey to becoming a leading sporting nation.
Celebrating Indian Achievements
India is poised to welcome the world's best players, having established itself as a formidable force in badminton. Since 2011, the country has consistently secured at least one medal at every BWF World Championships, totaling 14 medals across 11 consecutive editions, a record matched only by China.
PV Sindhu's Home Advantage
PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist and five-time World Championships medalist, shared her enthusiasm for the upcoming home tournament. "The World Championships have been a highlight of my career. Competing in front of our fans makes it even more special. Hosting this event in India after 17 years is a significant milestone and reflects the growth of badminton in our country. I hope it inspires many young players to dream big and believe in their potential," she remarked.
A Historic First for Young Athletes
For many of India's current badminton stars, this will be their first opportunity to compete in a World Championship on home soil. Sanjay Mishra, General Secretary of BAI, noted, "Indian badminton is at an exciting juncture. Our young players are making significant strides internationally, while seasoned athletes continue to excel. Hosting the BWF World Championships now is a testament to India's rising status in global badminton and a chance to inspire the next generation to engage with the sport."
